2010 Trance X Advanced SL 1

Giant's Trance X Advanced SL 1 is a 5-inch trail bike that has the DNA of a race rig. Its full carbon frame makes it light, stiff and sick fast while the 120mm-travel Fox fork gives you enough travel to tame backcountry epics with ease. A 1.5-inch tapered steerer combined with a 15mm through-axle on the fork gives you point and shoot precision that you can feel when rallying wide open singletrack and picking your way through rockgardens. A full XT group including wheels and brakes walks the line of race-ready weight with all-mountain toughness. And, traction duties are aptly handled by perhaps the most versatile tires around, the Kenda Nevegals, while Giant controls and a Fizik saddle round out the specs.

2010 Trance X1

Mountain biking's wonderful rule is simple: what goes up, must come down. Go up and down with ease aboard Giant's Trance X1. Sporting 5-inches of Maestro-suspended travel out back controlled by Fox's sweet Float RP23, the X1 flies up climbs and smooths out rocky descents with speed and agility. Balancing the rear is Fox's sweet F120RL fork with a 15mm through-axle for stiff, precise steering and solid handling. Controlling all this fun is easy, too, with Avid's Elixir stoppers giving you the hold grail of power with modulation. And, awesome all-mountain specs like Giant controls and a Shimano XT/XTR drivetrain with XT wheels make the Trance more than ready for fun, epic rides.

2010 Anthem X3

Giant's Anthem X3 is your go-to machine for epic days and fast rides. The Anthem’s ALUXX SL frame gives you everything you want for XC: super-light quickness, amazing torsional stiffness and loads of tire clearance. The frame goodness continues 4-inches of incredibly active Maestro suspension out back and race-tuned geometry that lets you shred singletrack. Plus, the Anthem X3 hooks you up with durable Mavic rims wrapped with Michelin tires, a slick Shimano Deore drivetrain and powerful disc brakes.

2010 Trance X3

With 5-inches of travel both front and rear, Giant's Trance X3 is the trail bike that takes you further into the wild than you thought possible. The Maestro suspension delivers efficient pedaling with smooth, controlled descending over rough singletrack at any speed. Shimano's slick drivetrain with a low-profile SLX rear derailleur fires off quick shifts. And, the tough Mavic wheels are powered by stiff Shimano Deore cranks. Plus, you get top-level braking from Avid with their sick Juicy discs, too.

2010 Trance X4

You'll rule the rough stuff like never before on your Trance X4. This superb steed smooths technical terrain with 120mm of Maestro travel front and rear. Giant's ALUXX SL aluminum frame is durable, efficient and handles confidently in treacherous topography. And no matter where you ride, speed will come easy with WTB wheels, Shimano cranks and Giant controls. Plus, the X4's 27-speed Shimano drivetrain keeps pedaling fluid and smooth while Shimano's disc brakes deliver pure stopping power.

09 Reign X2

Pushing the limits of value-packed, all-mountain riding is Giant's Reign X2. With 171mm of fully active Maestro-equipped travel, the Reign rewards courageous riders with its highly acclaimed climbing and descending prowess. The masters of freeride suspension at Marzocchi give you their shock and fork for burly plushness that only they could offer. Race Face controls add some North Shore respect while the WTB rims are tough enough to bash down nasty steeps and light enough to go for another run.

Giant's Anthem X2 gives you everything you want and need for technical XC: super-light quickness, torsional stiffness, big tire clearance and 100mm of Maestro-equipped travel. The full Shimano XT group, the Mavic wheels, the Race Face controls; these all add up to a versatile ride that's light enough to climb all day, tough enough for all-day epics in the backcountry and fast enough to race. Since these things have different suspension needs, the Anthem is equipped with a Fox fork and shock so you can custom-tune the feel of your ride for all your varied disciplines. This bike is as versatile as you are.

Madone 5.1

This bike really moves. Great ability to climb hills, maintain speed in the flats and handles very well. I traded up from a Trek 2.1. I also upgraded wheel set to Bontrager racelite XL. Well worth the extra money.

The Most Expensive Bike In The World

When this pedal of this bike hits metal — it strikes 24-karat gold. Scandinavian design team AURUMANIA (which means preoccupied with gold) debuted the Gold Bike last September, a luxury item touted as the world’s “most lavish and expensive bike.” Just 10 of the gold bikes were made and come outfitted with a hand-stitched, brown leather Brooks saddle. Oh, and each bike is “generously” bespeckled with more than 600 Swarovski crystals. The ticket for this ride only costs a little over $100,000.

The Supermotard: a track bike with mountain tires

This hybrid track bike with mountain bike wheels and it looks awesome. While there may be no particular need to mix the two bikes together, I can’t help but say that I rather like the fat wheeled look that this Supermotard has.

As for the name, I’d change it. But everything else is neat!

Electric Mountain Bikes

Mountain biking can be fun for all ages of people, and with new technologies, is accessible to most anyone. Recently companies have developed mountain bikes that have small electric motors which typically operate on the rear tire. These electric bikes can greatly assist getting up and over difficult terrain, making mountain bike trails only accessible to extraordinarily fit individuals usable to anyone.

Salsa Fargo 29er complete bike

COming in February - Please Feel free to pre-order since these will go fast.
If that long and winding road is beckoning to you…consider our adventure touring 29’er mountain bike, the Fargo. Crafted of Salsa Classico CroMoly, the Fargo is a bit of a bicycling anomaly: a disc brake only, drop bar mountain bike designed for fully-loaded touring. Drop bars provide multiple hand positions for long days on the road or trail. A full compliment of braze-on’s on the frame and fork allow for both front and rear racks and fenders. The investment cast chainstay-mounted disc brake mount is conveniently tucked out of the way, eliminating accessory mounting interference. Load as much or as little gear as you choose for your next adventure. Six (count ‘em, six) water bottle cage mounts (on sizes 18 – 24") help keep you hydrated on a long journey. The sloped toptube allows plenty of standover clearance for those fully-loaded starts and stops. Both frame and fork offers gobs of tire clearance. Run pavement friendly 700c x 35mm rubber, or throw on some big 29 x 2.4" meat (29 x 2.3" with Planet Bike Cascadia fenders). The Fargo is designed to take you wherever it is you wish to go. Throw a dart at a map, make some plans, load up your gear, and hit the two-wheel highway. Fargo. Go far.

MERCEDES BENZ 2009 MOUNTAIN BIKE

Mercedes Benz Launches 2009 'All Mountain Limited' Mountain Bike

STUTTGART, GERMANY - Mercedes-Benz released photos this week of their limited edition 2009 'All Mountain Limited' Mountain Bike which is part of the Mercedes Benz 2009/2010 Bicycles range. For those wishing to put on a few Mercedes-Benz miles/km's with pedal power, this new mountain bike has a solid construction built to last. Mercedes-Benz has worked with ADP Engineering of Germany to design this mountain bike and it has a full floating suspension front and rear. The front shock is a Fox 32 F-Series and the rear centrally mounted shock is a Fox Float RP 23.

The 2009 'All Mountain Limited' will have a worldwide production run of just 100 examples and it is priced at 3999 Euros. For Mercedes-Benz, the concept is to get a high-end example of their quality bicycle engineering out in the marketplace, so for such a limited supply bike, the selling price is not too bad considering the level of hardware. Those wishing to secure their example of the 2009 'All Mountain Limited'should place their orders quickly, as just 100 worldwide will be gone in a flash.

On rough terrain, the 'All Mountain Limited' has 120 mm of suspension travel at the front, and 125 mm of travel at the rear. The front suspensions can be locked-out and the rear can be adjusted with the supplied damper pump. The wheelset on the Mercedes-Benz Mountain Bike is DT Swiss X 1800. Tires front and rear are Continental's 2009 Mountain King 'Supersonic' type. The pedals are made from carbon fibre and are Truvativ Noir's. As we get more precise details about this mountain bike, theirEarth will add the details accordingly, but the cycle will definitely turn heads as it carries Mercedes-Benz's quality image.

Ellsworth Truth Mountain Bike

There are few Mountain bikes which have reached the point of cult status like the Ellsworth Truth Mountain Bike. With a combination of Instant Center Tracking (ICT) and the four-bar suspension, the Ellsworth Truth does you justice by maximizing your pedaling efficiency and minimizing your physical fatigue. Whether you're into 100 milers, 24-hour racing, XC racing, freestyle terrain, or marathon or adventure racing, the Truth mountain bike will give you great satisfaction. The Ellsworth Truth is available in 14, 16, 18 and 20” sizes in Black, Blue, Smoke, Red Velvet or a special edition Pink. By buying the special edition Pink color Ellsworth will give $50 from each Pink frame purchase to cancer research as part of Ellsworth's Project Pink. For a top of the line set-up your looking at roughly $10,000. Ride on in style extreme One!

K2 Proflex

You may be saying to yourself by now that the bikes I'm talking about won't be the best at anything. This is true (not fastest up or downhill, not the lightest or the strongest) but what they are best at is doing everything. Specialist bikes are usually terrible at several things each. I don't plan on going on a ride with no climbs or perhaps no descents, I want to go and ride mountains (these often have both, DUH!) and I want to have fun all day without feeling like I got on the wrong side of Mike Tyson. Does any of this sound like the way you ride? No? tough.
This is the point where many an article wimps out and refuses to name names that fit the bill for 'Best mountain bike in the world'. But not this article. This article kicks butt. So who makes the best mountain bikes? Specialized, Ellsworth, Santa Cruz and Marin. How many of you have I upset now? That many? Gulp. OK there are dozens more manufacturers who have produced at least one truly excellent bike, if not more. But these companies stand out for their obsessive reluctance to sell any bad bikes at all. Just in case you think I'm more biased than a party political spin doctor, remember I currently own a two year old K2 Proflex (great bike for sure) and I don't get paid for this website. There, I'm purer than the driven snow, and you know what snow looks like when it's been driven on....

Ellsworth

So what is a mountain bike? Some would say it's a self propelled, wheeled vehicle designed to go wherever the rider wants to and have fun at the same time. I hope this isn't too obvious, but in order to answer the question, you really need to know what you want. I can think of a load of other definitions based on which bike is fastest or lightest or some other scientific measure, but these yard sticks have proved un-helpful in the past. The lightest bike will break the moment you start having real fun. The fastest bike uphill is more uncomfortable than a hair shirt. The fastest bike downhill only goes uphill if you have legs like Arnold Schwarzenegger (or a lift). Perhaps you can see where I'm coming from, there are lots of specialist bikes out there but unless you have a limited riding style they're very limiting indeed.
